September 11 – 15, 2024

The Harzer Hexenstieg – one of the most famous premium trails in Germany, and also one of the oldest. This five-day hike in late summer / early autumn is mystical, with morning fog on the meadows and always in the company of the witch after which this trail is named. The witch leads us of course also onto the Brocken and to numerous stamp points (for those who collect stamps for the Harzer Wandernadel). Two of the five days are actually quite demanding. There the trail is about 30 km long – but ascents and descents remain moderate.

We walk the Hexenstieg as follows:

Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024:
Meet in the morning in Osterrode at the train station, hike on the Hexenstieg via the Marienblick to Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Approx. 17 km, approx. 550 vertical meters in the ascent, 200 in descent. Overnight stay / breakfast in a simple hotel (double room).

Thursday, Sept 12, 2024:
Hike from Clausthal-Zellerfeld to Torfhaus. We are in the core area of the Oberharzer Wasserregal, which served to supply water to the Clausthal mines. On about 27 km we expect about 500 meters of ascent and 300 in the descent. Overnight stay with half board at the youth hostel Torfhaus (dormitory).

Friday, Sept. 13, 2024:
Hike from Torfhaus over the Brocken to Drei Annen Hohne, the most famous part of the Hexenstieg. Approx. 20 km, 350 vertical meters in the ascent, approx. 600 in the descent. Overnight stay with half board in the Kräuterhof (double room).

Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024:
From Drei Annen Hohne, we start on the longest hike of the tour to Altenbrak. Large parts of the way lead along the Bode and its dams, but also at Rübeland’s famous stalactite caves. Approx. 30 km, 500 meters of ascent, 700 meters of descent. Overnight stay in a simple hotel with breakfast (double room).

Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024:
A shorter trail, towards the finish line: from Altenbrak to Thale. We follow the Bode river to the center of Thale. Approx. 14 km, 300 vertical meters in ascent, 400 in descent. Departure from there in the early afternoon.

Osterode and Thale each have good rail connections. It is sensible to travel by public transport.
